The idea of SwitchQuick was actually conceived back in August of 1988 when the inventor, Greg Helton, spent his first day at his new assignment as a terminal supervisor for a major LTL carrier in Ottumwa, IA. Greg asked the driver coming into the yard with a set of pups to put the rear trailer to door two, and then the lead trailer to door seven, in that order. Greg was surprised at the response (and soon to come ridicule from the driver) that it was impossible to perform the request, as the driver or any other driver, could not back a set of doubles. Greg asked himself, "Why not?"
Greg Helton continued his career pursuits advancing to terminal operations manager, to sales and sales management positions, with two of the largest carriers in the country. Greg dabbled with the idea until April of 2002, when he contracted a team of mechanical engineers, with over Forty years of engineering experience, to design a piece of equipment that could enable carriers moving trailers in tandem the ability to back a set of doubles. The device Steve Kunert and Blayne Medema were contracted to develop had to provide carriers a return on their investment in less than twelve months of out-fitting their fleets.

These "parameters" were based upon hundreds of interviews over the course of two years, primarily with the drivers themselves, as well as potential buyers of the device. The device is now known as SwitchQuick. Greg Helton sold the device to SwitchQuick LLC., where SwitchQuick LLC created its trademark and brand, while further developing the product to meet the three important issues concerning fleets that may purchase SwitchQuick.
